Getting a flat tire might seem like an annoying disruption to your perfectly planned day. Perhaps you've been there, stranded on the roadside, questioning why today of all days. But sometimes, such unexpected turns lead us to moments that define the purpose and alignment we are seeking in life. That very thing happened to me just this week.

What You Will Learn from This Blog:

- How life's interruptions can lead to purposeful encounters

- Real-life story of connecting with others when least expected

- The importance of staying open to life’s unpredictable opportunities

The Flat Tire That Changed the Day

In a hurry, I pulled into a parking lot to pick up my dad. I was there to give him a ride to his follow up doctors appointment after spine surgery a few weeks ago. It was an important doctors appointment. I only parked for a minute, as my "always early" dad was already standing at his door. We both quickly got into my FJ and as soon as I pulled out of the parking space I realized something was wrong. I had driven less than a mile and had to pull off the road. A huge piece of metal lodged into my back tire during that one minute I had parked. WHY?? It’s one of those moments where you feel everything going downhill. Plans? Out the window. I quickly got on the phone with my sister (who was in the middle of a work meeting). She had to come get dad so he could make that appointment. Then a call to my husband, interrupting the meeting he was on his way to. My husband graciously came to my rescue then I was off to my favorite locally owned Tire Shop (shout out to House of Tires in Bryan, Texas).

What if this wasn’t random chaos but a well-placed step on my path? What if your interruptions are the same?

The Serendipitous Encounter

As I found myself sitting at House of Tires, mapping the intricate web of delays this flat tire caused to not just my schedule buy several others for the day, little did I know I was about to meet someone whose need was deeper than my own. Enter a woman, weary and in need of hope. As she waited for her turn to be helped, her phone rang. Being in a small waiting area, it was impossible not to overhear what she was saying. Relaying the story of her 12 year old daughter who was attacked by a couple of school boys, just two days prior. It was a vicious attack and while the mother spoke quietly, she was terrified for her daughters well being and her entire family. See this was an attack from a monstrous neighbors two sons and the monster himself (those boys dad) was even worse. She was making sure her car was in order in case she had to drive somewhere to help her children.

I immediately wanted to do something. I silently asked "God, do I need to buy her tires? If so I'll do it." I felt like he said No, but that I should pray with her. Again I thought. "OK, I'll pray for her" and again it was as if God said NO, PRAY WITH HER, not just FOR HER.

Embrace the Unexpected

Ever wonder why or how you end up in certain places? It’s as if God conspires to give us opportunities to align with our true purpose. The flat tire wasn’t just a hiccup in my day; it was a nudge from a higher power, steering me to be exactly where I was meant to be.

After arguing with God in my head for a little bit, I stood by the woman at the counter, asking a little more about her story. It continued to pull at my heart. I kept waiting for the feeling that I should just buy her tires or something but she had already made her payment on a repair and she wasn't there to buy new tires. I felt like God said, that's not what she needs. She needs you to pray with her.

The woman and I walked out of the tire shop close to the same time and before I could deny this feeling any longer, I asked her if it would be alright if I prayed with her? She was shocked and her eyes lit up. She was so grateful I asked.

Before praying, I asked her name and her daughters name. She told me more about the situation. It was undeniable that anyone in her situation would be desperate for any kind of hope, let alone a single mom such as herself. I had no idea what I would say in that prayer and as I held her hand and prayed out loud, I was shocked at the things I was saying. It felt like most of the words were not my words but someone else's. Someone higher and with more authority. But as I claimed the power of Jesus over her and her family and her neighborhood - for protection from this "monster" of a neighbor, a peace for her situation came over me. It was beautiful and I was so glad I didn't ignore our intersecting paths for this purpose. This wasn't about me. It was about her and her need to know there is a God that does care about her and her daughter. See, sometimes it's our money that's needed. Sometimes it's our hands or words that God needs to speak through. If we aren't willing to do that then others miss out on hearing from Him in the way God had wanted them to hear of or see His work.

Through my experience, consider: how can life’s interruptions actually guide you toward your deeper calling?
